The new site of Middletown’s library branch is expected to open in May.

Crews are currently working on the building’s interior in preparation for the May 4 opening. Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater announced the opening date during a briefing Monday on the county’s budget.

At 15,000 square feet, the new location on East Green Street in Middletown will be about four times as large as the branch’s current Prospect Street location, Fitzwater said.

With the addition of about 22,000 new items, along with the existing items, the collection for the new location will be about 80% larger than the current location’s collection, Frederick County Public Libraries spokeswoman Kelly Cambrel wrote in an email Monday.

The current location will close to the public at 5 p.m. on April 6, with the transfer and addition of the new site’s collection happening between then and the new branch’s opening, Cambrel wrote.

Customers can return items to the current location until May 2.

Middletown resident Sarah Patterson said Monday that she and her two children, in elementary and middle school, are eagerly awaiting the opening of the new branch.

Patterson said she’s excited to see inside the new location.

“It’s gorgeous from the exterior,” she said.

She said she and her family come to the current location about twice a month.

Madison Huber, a teacher at Middletown Elementary School who was tutoring after school at the current location Monday, said the new location will have more space for activities like hers.

A lot of students at the elementary school are excited about the new location opening, she said.

The last day to place a hold on items at the current location will be April 1, Cambrel wrote.

Any holds not picked up by April 6 will be sent to the Myersville branch to be picked up until the new Middletown location opens.

Any customer with an existing hold scheduled to come to Middletown can redirect it to another branch. Otherwise, it will be automatically redirected to Myersville until the new Middletown location opens on May 4, Cambrel wrote.
